Christopher Ward C11 Review

Like many of the Christopher Ward timepieces, the C11 MSL MK1 Automatic takes its inspiration from the power of flight. This model enjoys an affinity with the clean lines of a modern jet altimeter. Both the C11 MSL MK1 Automatic and C11 MSL MK1 Chronograph utilise a completely new case design with a circular dial securely held by four screws in a case where the facets have been smoothened out and decorated with vertical brushing. Unmistakably reminiscent of the jet airplane’s cockpit instrument panel.

The C11 MSL MK1 Automatic, C11 MSL MK1 Chronograph and MSL Black Manta MK1 Chronograph employ an unashamedly contemporary styling that sets these watches apart from the usual retro look found on aviation genre watches.

These models are created using 316L surgical grade stainless steel complemented by museum grade sapphire crystal. The straps on all three watches are premium Italian leather and complete a look that transports aviation style from the traditional to the modern. All are available in black or brown.

The hand polished cases come with a unique, engraved serial number and are completed with the legend in Latin ‘Pervenio Pro Astrum Altus’ – ‘Reach for the highest star’.

These high-grade timepieces are Swiss made, utilising high-grade 316L stainless steel. In addition, the MK1 Chronograph and Black Manta MK1 Chronograph utilise a newly designed PVD black case. The C11 MSL Automatic employs 26 Jewel Swiss mechanical movement, while the MK1 Chronograph and Black Manta MK1 Chronograph utilise 13 Jewel Swiss quartz movement.

The face on these watches is fashioned using anti-reflective museum grade sapphire and includes a black date calendar, unusually located in the four o’clock position, adding to the look of a pilot’s altimeter.

All three watches include a black calendar date, with the Black Manta MK1 Chronograph and MK1 Chronograph additionally including a stopwatch function.

The hands and indexes are of high density SuperLuminova marking and all three watches are water resistant to 10 atm.

Christopher Ward uses premium leather for its straps and these three models are securely fastened using an adjustable, Italian leather strap.

The MSL MK1 Automatic and the other two models are securely fastened with a back plate held in place by four screws, housing a 42mm diameter case made from 316L surgical grade stainless steel. The MSL MK1 Automatic and Black Manta MK1 Chronograph are 10.7mm in height, while the MK1 Chronograph is a fraction larger at 10.8mm. These watches have a reassuring solidity – the MK1 Automatic carries a weight of 108g, while the Black Manta MK1 and MK1 Chronograph are 102g.

The movement of the MSL MK1 Automatic is controlled by a reliable Sellita SW200-1 calibre mechanism that offers 28,800 vibrations per hour (vph). The Black Manta MK1 Chronograph and the MK1 Chronograph incorporate Ronda 5030.D calibre quartz movement.

The hand-stitched Italian leather strap on the MSL MK1 Automatic is 22mm in width, as are those on the Black Manta MK1 Chronograph and the MK1 Chronograph.
